At sunrise, Yeho and Doumi gather sparkling dew on a leaf

Week 1 · Sep 28 – Oct 4 · Published Oct 5

Dew, Footprints, and Laughter Beneath the Hat Brim

Before the sun awakened the Leaf-Gathering Cabin, Yeho and Doumi were already busy. They moved gently to the largest leaf by their home, where Doumi watched bright dew roll along the veins. Yeho bent down, carefully collecting each precious drop into a bottle cap. The moment the first sparkling bead landed, Doumi beamed, whispering, “I helped!” Mom nodded kindly, and the early peace of their teamwork warmed their hearts. For two mornings straight, they were absorbed in the shimmering world atop the leaves, footsteps lightening as both their water supply and spirits grew.

By noon the heat pressed down, turning their little house into a sweltering greenhouse. Doumi, sprawled on the thin wooden floor, got a bright idea and fetched his still-fragrant pomelo-peel hat. Tiptoeing, he wedged its brim into the window, blocking the harsh yellow glare. The room cooled, Yeho squinted in pleasure, and Taisheng gave a rare, approving nod. They had barely settled when, with a thumping sound, a curious sparrow landed on a nearby branch, eyeing the colorful hat. With a quick peck, the bird tugged at the brim. Doumi lunged to save it, and the whole family scrambled—one after another they clung on, making a chain at the window, struggling against the bird. Finally, the pomelo hat lost a corner, everyone tumbled into the hammock, laughter bubbling through the heat as the sparrow eyed them from outside, triumphant with its yellow-green prize.

At dusk, Suining carried her leaf-canvas and slender thorn, determined to etch the park’s lights—this time, not the way home but the scene she longed for. Doumi went along, bracing the wide leaf with powdery little hands. As the lanterns blinked on and reflections shimmered across the lake, Suining bent to carve glowing dots upon the leaf.

Suddenly, a gecko crept into view—far bigger than either sibling, its dark, bright eyes locked on theirs. Doumi tensed, his grip smudging bark dust over the canvas. The gecko called out, then darted after a passing moth, leaving behind a trail of delicate, flower-shaped footprints right between Suining’s etchings—a silent firework across her city night sky. Back home, Doumi pressed his own handprint beside the gecko's marks, even Taisheng added his thumb. Every speck told a small story.

Outside, the world was filled with hazards. Taisheng, out on errands, slipped between fallen logs and ferns, an old bag on his back. The sharp tap of a hiking stick stabbed the earth just a handspan away. He held his breath until the humans passed, finding solace in the sunbeam-splashed moss, ever more aware of their home’s fragility.

Late that night, strange noises stirred near the tree roots. Taisheng warned, “Stay inside, away from there.” The slippery roots hid silent dangers; everyone moved quietly, and outings were put on hold. Their safety felt as rare as clear air after rain—worth treasuring, even as their spirits grew heavier with caution.

But hope was quietly budding. One morning, Yeho found new green shoots in the nursery, whispering the news to Suining and Doumi. Fresh tips broke through the soil, lighting up every eye: “Our seedlings are growing!” For a moment, the promise of good things ahead eased them all.

There were humble treasures, too. Early one day by the park, Suining and Yeho gathered bits of pomelo peel and corn left near a bin. “Is it edible?” Doumi asked. Taisheng solemnly cautioned, “Don’t get too close, let’s bring it home first!” Together, they brought home slight but meaningful harvests—little by little, easing anxieties, and showing that even small efforts could gently mend bigger worries.

As the week slipped by, the cabin filled with dew-touched fingerprints, a corner-missing pomelo hat, and a patchwork of gecko and child prints on a leaf-canvas. Some dangers must be skirted, some blessings gathered with patience; between sunrise and nightfall, they quietly grew—each drop of care shining like dew along a secret vein.
